Noxious Weeds

There are 25 weeds that are classified as noxious that could negatively impact agricultural and horticultural lands. To view pictures of these and other Ontario weeds, please visit the Ontario Ministry of Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) website.

If you have a concern that noxious weeds, located on the Township's road allowance, are negatively impacting agriculture or horticulture, please contact the Public Works Department.  In the case where the Township and landowner do not agree, the landowner may file a complaint with Lanark County and the Weed Inspector will conduct an assessment to determine if an order should be issued to mitigate or destroy the weeds.

For more answers to other frequently asked questions you can also refer to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affair's webpage and the Weed Control Act.

Each year in late June or early July, all the roadsides in Tay Valley Township are mowed to ensure there are proper sight lines for safe driving. Recently, roadside mowing has also become what is termed a "control measure" to reduce the infestation of the invasive Wild Parsnip.

Since 2021, the Township also conducts a second cut in the fall.

All equipment is washed at the end of each day to prevent any spread.

More Information on Wild Parsnip

Lanark County follows an Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) Plan to use cultural, mechanical and chemical methods to control weed or brush concerns. The IVM Plan integrates two or more control methods to best target the weed while minimizing herbicide use and its impacts. Within the IVM Plan there are four major topics:

  • Roadside vegetation
  • Weed control
  • Roadside restoration
  • Education and awareness

For additional information view their Vegetation Management Plan webpage, which offers details about weed control and invasive species with particular emphasis on the area's Target Weeds, including Wild Parsnip.
