As of May 1, 2025, the Reeve has additional powers and duties, known as strong mayor powers:
- appoint and dismiss senior staff and establish and re-organize departments (either by the Reeve or their delegate)
- create committees of council, assign their functions, and appoint their chairs and vice-chairs (either by the Reeve or their delegate)
- propose the Township's budget (subject to Council amendments, a Reeve veto, and a Council override process)
- propose certain municipal by-laws for Council's consideration if the Reeve is of the opinion the proposed by-law could potentially advance a provincial priority, if more than one-third of all Council members vote in favour
- submit matters for Council's consideration if the Reeve believes it supports a provincial priority
- veto certain by-laws if the Reeve is of the opinion it supports a provincial priority
- direct Township staff in writing related to the additional powers and duties
The Reeve must exercise these powers in writing and make them available to the public, subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
