2026 Municipal Election - PUBLIC NOTICE – Voters’ List

2026 Municipal Election - PUBLIC NOTICE – Voters’ List

Tay Valley Township would like to clarify the process for preparing and maintaining the Voters’ List for the 2026 Municipal Election.

Who prepares the Voters’ List?

The Voters’ List is produced by Elections Ontario and was provided to the Township on August 14, 2026.

Upon receipt, the Township reviews the list for obvious errors, such as duplicate entries. This initial review does not involve verifying every individual elector on the list.

As of September 1, 2026, the Township’s role is to make corrections to the Voters’ List when errors or omissions are brought to our attention.

Elections Ontario

The Voters’ list was not built from the 2022 Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) list as it has in the past, rather recent changes to legislation required Elections Ontario to extract the information from the Provincial Register and build upon it through information received from a number of trusted and verified data sources including Elections Canada, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transportation, MPAC, Registrar General, municipalities and the RegisterToVote website. At times, information from different sources may conflict, may not match due to formatting differences, or may require additional verification before a record can be updated.

Elections Ontario has noted that they have identified instances where electors appear in Elections Ontario’s Register but do not appear on the list provided to municipalities. An elector may have previously chosen to not be included on a municipal elections list.

Further, the information Elections Ontario provides municipalities comes from a variety of trusted and verified sources. If a source associates an elector with a property and Elections Ontario has not received newer, verifiable information to update their record, the elector remains associated with that property.

Deceased Individuals

The Township generally receives notification of a death from the Province when the death occurs within Tay Valley Township. When an individual passes away in another municipality, the death notification is directed to the municipality where the death occurred, and the Township may not be notified.

If you are aware of a deceased individual who remains on the Voters’ List, please contact the Township by telephone or email. The Township can review the information and make the appropriate corrections. Supporting documentation, such as a death certificate or an obituary containing sufficient identifying information, can be provided to assist with verification.

Property Tax Bills

Residents and property owners are not required to bring in copies of their property tax bills to verify their voter eligibility or information. Staff have access to the relevant property information through the Township’s records when required.

How You Can Help?

We encourage residents and property owners to contact the Township if they identify an error, omission or other concern regarding the Voters’ List. Your assistance helps ensure that the list is as accurate as possible for the 2026 Municipal Election.
