Tay Valley Township Increases Community Activities and Programs Thanks to $54,900 OTF grant from Ontario Government
Yesterday, Tay Valley Township councillors, staff and residents joined together at the May Diner’s Club at Maberly Hall to learn about how $54,900 from the Resilient Communities Fund from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) was used to adapt and add new activities, programs and services within the Township following a two-year interruption during the pandemic. With this funding, participation in existing programs increased and new, accessible activities and programs were developed to reduce self-isolation and promote mental and physical health.
“The province’s $54,900 contribution to the Township’s sport and recreation fund supports the vital connection between community interaction and mental and physical well-being” said Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP John Jordan. The results of Tay Valley’s co-ordinated efforts are already being realized at every age level with increased participation and community awareness. Tay Valley is on the move and that’s great news all around.
The funding enabled the Township to hire a Sports and Recreation Coordinator to support existing programs including a community choir, karate, youth soccer and youth hockey. The youth soccer program in 2024 had its largest enrollment since its establishment in 2008, with nearly 200 participants.
The Coordinator also launched a community survey in August 2023 to gage what the community wanted to see with regards to recreational activities and programs resulting in the introduction of a number of new activities and programs - bird watching, craft corner, diner’s club, pickleball, tai chi, tennis, yoga and several workshops such as CPR, Heart Health and Mindfulness Body and Earth held at the newly established Forest Trail Park.
Partnership programs were also formed, allowing for long term sustainability through the support and facilitation of our partners. Examples include the Maberly Memory Café in partnership with the Lanark Leeds Grenville Alzheimer’s Society; the Maberly Book Club, Storytime and Boox Exchange program in partnership with the Perth and Distract Union Library; FoodFit, in partnership with The Table Community Food Centre, and EarlyON, a partnership with Children’s Resources On Wheels (CROW).
Rob Rainer, Reeve of Tay Valley Township states “I am pleased to see the positive connection, and level of engagement within the community these programs promote”.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Ontario government with a mission to build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Last year, OTF invested more than $105M in 732 community projects and multi-sector partnerships. Projects aim to enhance economic well-being, foster more active lifestyles, support child and youth development, provide spaces for people to come together and connect, and create a more sustainable environment.
