Following the 1998 Tay Valley Township amalgamation, Council wanted to continue with joint services from two separate and distinct fire departments. At that time, Tay Valley Township shared a fire service with another municipality through a long-established Fire Board (BBD&E Fire department) as well as having another fire department totally within its direct jurisdiction (South Sherbrooke Fire Department). It was a rare circumstance within the province.
In March, 2003, Tay Valley Township underwent a Fire Services Review to determine the fire services' existing capabilities. The township had to decide if the current structure was the best delivery model, both from a safety and cost-effective perspective. With the support of the Fire Marshal's Office, the Council struck a Fire Services Review Committee to investigate the status quo and determine if changes were warranted.
In May, 2005, the Tay Valley Township and Drummond North/Elmsley Township Councils both supported the Fire Services Review Committee recommendation to merge the BBD&E Fire Department and the South Sherbrooke Fire Department into one department governed by one board - the Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue Board. The merger took effect on January 1, 2006.
