Waste Sites

There is one landfill site in Tay Valley Township at Glen Tay.  In addition there is a waste transfer station in Stanleyville and Maberly where household waste and recyclables are collected but not landfilled on site.  To view location maps and hours for all three sites, please scroll down.  


WASTE SITE SERVICES
In order to access the landfill site, you need a “waste services” card.  The card is good for as long as you own property, and must be available for presentation each and every time you go to the waste site.  Waste services cards are available at the Township office.

AND MAY BE CHECKED BY THE ATTENDANT

2010
Garbage Bag Tags

Your 2010 Garbage Bag Tags are now available at the Township Office.  
Each household receives 40 tags annually.  Additional tags are $1.00 per tag.  

BAG TAGS
Bag tags may be picked up at the Municipal Office and are made available each January for the year.   Each household receives 40 tags.  Additional tags cost $1.00 per tag.  Do not put a tag on your bag until you get to the site.


 

RECYCLING PROGRAM

Please sort your recyclables into the following four categories:

MIXED CONTAINERS

(All items must be empty & clean)

  • Plastic containers (clear & coloured)
    #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 – eg. pop bottles, yogurt containers, cookie trays, etc

  • Plastic Film – eg. shopping bags, milk bags, bread bags, plastic sheeting & other plastic film 
    with #4 symbol

  • Cans – aluminum & steel
    (Please flatten cans : Saving space saves dollars)

MIXED FIBRE
(Please, no plastic)

  • Boxboard & corrugated cardboard - clean, collapsed & bundled
    eg. milk & juice containers, cereal boxes, frozen juice containers with metal lids removed, 
    toilet / paper towel rolls

  • Newspaper, magazines & other paper
    eg. computer paper, manila & window envelopes, books with hardcover removed, phone books

METAL BIN (Scrap metal)

eg. copper, aluminum, steel, galvanized pipe, metal furniture, etc

 

Glass, dishes, pottery, ceramics

 

NOT ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING

·          Textiles (please take clean textiles to local depots)

·          Food wrap and plastic lunch & freezer bags

·          Hazardous waste is NOT accepted.  See below for hazardous waste information.

We encourage everyone to recycle!!  
If you bring one full container of recyclables to the waste site you may dispose 
of one bag of garbage for free (without using a tag).  
Please sort your recyclables into the following four categories; mixed containers (plastic & cans), 
mixed fibre (boxboard/cardboard & newspaper/magazines), metals (scrap metal) and glass (dishes, pottery, ceramics).  

PLEASE FLATTEN YOUR CANS AND BUNDLE YOUR CARDBOARD 
SAVING SPACE SAVES DOLLARS.

 


COMPOSTING PROGRAM

The Township encourages residents to compost household and garden waste (such as brush) at home.  It is a great way to reduce your household garbage. 

 

Including compost in regular bagged garbage is not permitted under By-law 98-68.  Fines may be payable.  If home composting is not feasible, Glen Tay and Stanleyville sites will accept compost.  Only the following materials may be placed there.

·          Food waste (fruit, vegetables, bread)

·          Serviettes, paper towels, tissues

·          Sawdust, shaving, wood chips

·          Leaves & grass (out of the bag)

·          Plants & dryer lint

 

MEAT, GREASE & OIL ARE NOT ACCEPTED FOR COMPOSTING

Household Hazardous Waste Depot - Middleville

The Household Hazardous Waste Depot (HHWD), located at the Middleville waste site, 4686 Wolf Grove Road , will open for the 2010 season on Saturday, May 22nd at 9:00 a.m.  The site is available to all residents of Lanark Highlands and Tay Valley Townships .

The HHWD will be open until Thanksgiving Day to accept your household hazardous wastes, including motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, flammable liquids, latex/oil paints and stains, propane cylinders, batteries, acids and bases, pesticides, oxidizers (e.g. pool chemicals), fire extinguishers, pharmaceuticals (prescription or non-prescription drugs for huma or veterinary use), pathalogical waste (syringes).  Commercial, farm, or industrial wastes are NOT accepted.

The HHWD is open during all regular Middleville waste site hours - Monday 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Wednesday 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.

Please help our environment by disposing of household hazardous waste properly.
